The Best of Second City
Published in Audio Cassette by Listening Library (September, 1996)
Average review score:

Classic comedy from the granddaddy of all comedy troupes! This collections gathers classic sketches from 1959-present, and they're mostly fabulous. This material has been created by some of our country's sharpest comedic minds (John Belushi, Bill Murray, Martin Short, Mike Myers, etc.) and are performed here by current troupe members. The satire still cuts. There's a reason these scenes have been kept around for so long - they're hilarious! Everything from women in the military to parent-child mind games come in for ribbing during the course of (4) cassettes. Look for Ed Asner, Marsha Mason, "Saturday Night Live"'s Tim Kazurinsky, "The Daily Show"'s Stephen Colbert, "Strangers With Candy"'s Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello, "The Secret Lives Of Men"'s Mitch Rouse, "Mr. Show"'s Jill Talley, and "Whose Line Is It Anyway"'s Ron West.

The Best of Second City: Chicago's Famed Improv Theatre (Audio Theatre Series)
Published in Audio Cassette by L. A. Theatre Works (July, 1993)
Average review score:

Classic sketches from brilliant comediansThe Second City has lasted for 40 years by offering up biting social satire performed by unknowns who usually go on to become huge comedy stars. Every member of the SCTV Network show and most of the original cast of "Saturday Night Live" are Second City alums. The material covered in these tapes ranges from newer scenes to bits that have recurred since the '60s! Here, they are performed by some lesser-known, but no less hysterical, Second City vets. Chief among them: Tim Kazurinsky (from "Saturday Night Live"), "Strangers With Candy" cast members/writers Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, Amy Sedaris, & Mitch Rouse, Ron West ("3rd Rock From the Sun"), and Jill Talley ("Mr. Show"). Every bit is strong (this is a greatest hits, after all) and none outstay their welcome. Many of the scenes were created & originally performed by such heavy hitters as Belushi, Farley, Murray, etc. An incredible sampler of some of the best comedy of the past 40 years. And, it's live, too!

Betty Crocker's Kitchen Gardens
Published in Paperback by Golden Pr (August, 1979)
Average review score:

I'm sorry this book is out of print! This is a BEAUTIFUL book on kitchen gardens, with illustrations by Tasha Tudor, and wonderful relevant quotes. Lots of people are interested in kitchen gardens, and, of course, there are other books on them. But they'd have far to travel to compete with this one--combining solid information with delicious illustrations and various other charming tidbits. They would do well by reprinting this one--I wish they could.

The Big Book of Magic
Published in Paperback by Breese Books Ltd (June, 2000)
Average review score:

"Big Book of Magic" is apt descriptionI have a copy of this, published in 1976. It is an excellent book, covering a wide range of tricks, many classics, with good drawings and clear text. It evens describes classic stage illusions. My copy is a paperback, printed on acid paper, and is browning as a result. If you can get a copy on acid free paper, that's a better choice.

Bobbie Ann Mason Reads: In Country

18yo finds herself by searching for Vietnam killed fatherA great book for young people to get a real feel for what the Vietnam War has done to their generation. Sam Hughes, 18 year old girl, lives with her uncle who apparently has Agent Orange symptoms, and through him and a diary left by her dead father finds herself and comes to some conclusion about her parentage and her future. Her father died in Vietnam a few months after Sam was conceived. His diary is brutal, vivid, and gut retching to most readers. This is a brillant work which fits well in a humanities class of young people. I applaud the author for her keen insight into a crippling situation to many young peole.

Book of Indian Crafts and Costumes
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons ()
Average review score:

The best "how-to" reference for Native American artifacts.I have the 1946 hardcover printing of this book and how found it to be an immensely informative resource on the materials and construction of Native American crafts and ceremonial clothing. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interesting in the fundamentals of Native American handcrafts. Don't be fooled by the small number of pages--this is a VERY comprehensive book. Well written and easy for anyone to understand. Lots of interesting and informative diagrams.

The Branded Spy Murders
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (June, 1932)
Average review score:

Preventing A n Attack By The Japanese Navy On HonoluluCaptain Hugh North arrives in Honolulu. His mission is primarily to prevent a war from breaking out between Japan and the United States. A Japanese naval squadron is headed towards Honolulu with unknown intent. North attends a party at the home of Abner Polk, owner of a big American steel company. The other guests at the party include intelligence operatives from Russia, France, England and Japan as well as steel barons from France and Germany. All have an interest in either starting or preventing the war. Before the evening is over a dead female is found floating near Polk's dock. She has a strange design on her shoulder. Perhaps it is a tattoo that has been erased. Who is the dead girl and how does her death fit into a plot to start a war? The toughest obstacle North faces in this adventure is his attraction to Nadia Stefan, a beguiling Russian agent. Considering the fact that the story was written in 1932, the near attack by Japanese naval ships on Honolulu shows the author to be gifted with uncanny foresight.

The Buried Houses
Published in Paperback by Story Line Press (December, 1991)
Average review score:

David Mason is one the most talented modern poets alive! My favorite poems in "Buried Houses" is "The Nightingales of Andritsena." It is beautiful, unusual, and just a fine "story." Each character is real and very human as well as the relationships between them and this also goes for the other poems in "Buried Houses." Whether you are a poet, or just a fan of modern poetry, please pick up a copy of David Mason's books either at your local library or through amazon.com!
